How Many Are Playing Online Online Poker?
By Itay Paz
Though it is nearly impossible to know how many people
are actually playing online online poker, the numbers
are estimated to be very high. One statistic found
online states that poker online brings in about 12
billion dollars a year, and as much as 80% of that came
from players within the US. However, how accurate that
is cannot be known. Another source puts the amount made
by online poker as 240 million. That as for the year
2005, and as of that time, the state of Washington
deemed online poker to be illegal. Other states in the
US have followed suit, or have legislation pending.
However, many have ignored those rules and continue to
play. It should be noted that illegal play is for money,
but it is still legal to play for fun.
One estimate claims that there are 1.8 billion people in
the world playing online online poker in some form on
any given day. That is a lot of people. These numbers
are why so many new sites pop up all the time, and why
the ones that have been established for upwards of ten
years have remained popular and profitable. Some many
more can play poker online because it is so easy to
access. There is no driving, no hotel stay, and no
hassle. Though some prefer the physical location casinos
for poker, it is not something they can do every day,
but they can turn on their computer at any time.
While the number remain uncertain, one thing is clear.
Many are playing and they don’t want to be told that
they can’t play. Though wagering is illegal in some
places, many long-time players continue to wager. Others
have followed the legal trend of playing for fun, but
many think that takes something essential from the game.
Either way, it would appear that laws and regulations
are not stopping people from playing, but the monetary
impact is unknown as of yet, as the laws change all the
time. Because so many sites popping up are geared
towards playing online online poker, it would seem many
believe the numbers playing online will continue to grow
rapidly.
