All About The Online Poker Tournament

By Itay Paz

Most people who play poker today are doing so online. This applies to regular games and to tournament play. There are differences, and there can be downfalls from starting with an online poker tournament and then trying to go to a land based casino to play. Though the game remains the same, the way they are played and set up can be vastly different. Online tournament play is much faster and there may be thousands of people playing at once. This is not possible in most land based locations most of the time. A player who can win at an online tournament might have a harder time when playing in person with real people.

When playing in an online poker tournament, the player has the advantage of not having to worry about their ‘poker face’ while sitting at a table. There is a lot other players can tell about the experience of another player and what they are holding in their hand by their facial expressions and their body language. When playing online, this is gone. Players cannot see each other to study these things. Though this is an advantage for newer players, it hurts them when they go to a land based casino to play poker. They have not learned to control expressions and movements while playing, and they give away their newbie status rather quickly, along with how good or bad their cards in their hand really are. They won’t be able to bluff with any success.

When playing online, there are more tools a player can use. They have access to odds calculators and tips for playing a better game. New players have a clearer picture of what they should do next, and the software helps them from making mistakes in regards to when to wager and when to draw. Legality of play is another huge difference in some areas. Though a person can go to any land based casino to be involved in a poker tournament, it might not be legal online. The laws in some countries allow this, while others strictly forbid it. Countries like the United States have laws that are unclear. Though players can play in casinos, they might be violating the law when playing in an online poker tournament.
