By Itay Paz
Most who have heard of poker, but have never played,
don’t know much about the differences between the
different poker rule set ups that are out there. A
player, however, must know the different rules for
different games if they want to play. Poker is the name
of the game, but there are many different rules
associated with different poker styles. Although the
best way to learn the rules is to play, but that will
not work if someone wants to jump into tournament play.
There are some online tools and hints that can help
someone new learn the various rules and ways to of play
so they aren’t lost in their first game.
There are many different types of poker rule and
strategy that a player must learn. They should always
start with the basics of knowing how many cards they
will be dealt. This is different for many styles, so
that is one of the first things to learn. Also, learning
when the first wager is expected, and how to go about
matching or raising, depending on the style of play.
Along the same lines, it is important to know how many
more cards will be dealt and how to deal with any cards
that may be laid on the table as community cards (as
with Texas Holdem style). They all differ, so jumping
from one type of poker to another might not be as easy
as some would suspect.
When learning each poker rule, there are other subtle
things that must be learned and taken into
consideration. One big thing to learn about is
etiquette. There are some sacred rules of play and how
to proceed in each game that might be similar to all.
However, these are just as important as knowing how to
play. Before entering any game, a player should
understand what check, bet, fold, call, and raise all
mean. If they do, they have a pretty basic grasp of what
to do and when to do it. Nothing beats practice and
experience, but learning the very basic poker rules of
each style should be done before a player jumps in with
the experienced players.
